The Basketball Manitoba Women's Summer League kicked off in style with round one action. Game 1 - 17U Provincial Team defeats the University of Manitoba Bisons 58-45. The Provincial team stormed out of the gate and held on to win their first match up of the league. Jordan Tully scored 16 points to lead the way for the 17U while Samantha Pyke scored 10 points for the Bisons. Game 2 - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeat the All Stars 85-65. Kenesha Giles lead the way for U of W with 17 points while the Stars we paced by Patti Parker's 17. Game 3 - Team Elite defeated the Juniors 75-67 in a great game to wrap up the night. Michele Hynes dropped in 19 points while collecting the win, while the Juniors top scorers were Lauren Anderson and Meredith Ramos with 15 each. Second Round action takes place this coming Wednesday at at 6:00pm at the U of M and will have the 17U girls facing off against the University of Winnipeg, both teams trying to stay undefeated. Red River College and the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference have announced that Shane Ray has accepted the position of Manager of Athletics and Recreation at Red River College. Shane currently works with Sport Manitoba as the Executive Director of Curl Manitoba where he is responsible for strategic planning, event management, human resources, financial management, fundraising and policy-making as well as working with Manitoba’s elite curling athletes. Shane is also coaching in the WMBA.

Congratulations to Vic Pruden who was recently selected as the Ukrainian Sportsman of the Year at the St. Nicholas Men's Club 48th Annual dinner on May 10. Pruden, whose parents were both of Ukrainian heritage and who grew up in Winnipeg's North End, is a well-known veteran of basketball in Manitoba. He began coaching in 1957 when he coached the Isaac Newton High School Juvenile boy's team to a Provincial Championship. Vic had a successful coaching career at the high school, university, provincial and national levels. In eight years of coaching high school varsity boys at the Sisler and Vincent Massey, his teams won five provincial championships. In 1966, Vic started the intercollegiate men's program at United College, becoming the University of Winnipeg in 1967 and in 1972, he started the women's intercollegiate Wesmen program. In the late 1970's, Vic also coached the National Junior Women's Team.

Bison women’s basketball co-coaches Michele Hynes and Randy Kusano, both in their second season at Manitoba, have announced the commitment of Christina Posthumus to the Bison program for the upcoming 2013-14 season. Posthumus, 18, finished her high school career at Kildonan East Collegiate. The 6’2” forward had an impressive final season (2012-13) with Kildonan East as she was a captain and averaged 30 points per game with 16 rebounds per game, 11 assists per game, five steals per game plus four blocks per game while playing 30 minutes per game. During the year, the East St. Paul, MB native also earned all-star honours at the Daniel McIntyre, Lord Selkirk and Transcona tournaments, while being selected as MVP at the Kildonan East Tournament plus named Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA) Athlete of the Week for the week of February 12, 2013. Posthumus established a new Kildonan East school record for most points in a single game with 53.
The Brandon University Bobcats are pleased to announce the third recruit for the men’s basketball team for the upcoming season, in 6-foot-2 shooting guard Ryan Hawley of Winnipeg. Hawley is coming off an impressive senior varsity high school season in which he helped the Garden City Gophers to a Manitoba AAAA provincial title. Hawley spent his grade 12 season at Garden City after transferring from Kildonan East Collegiate. He transferred to the Gophers because of their basketball program, and the decision was a good one as they lost only three games all year en route to a provincial title, capped by an amazing final. The Gophers trailed the Sisler Spartans by 20 at the half before mounting an impressive come-back to win 87-84.
