Manitoba Provincial Team athletes Keylyn Filewich, Raizel Guinto and Niyah Becker (pictured left to right) have been identified by Canada Basketball along with 53 other athletes from across the country to the women’s national age-group assessment camp. The camp will run at Ryerson University in Toronto, ON from December 11-15. Invited from Manitoba will be coaches Alyssa Grant and Dan Becker as Assessment Camp Coaches.
“We look forward to assessing progress of returnees and welcoming new nationally identified into our camp and see them compete and provide direction on their individual performance plans,” said Denise Dignard, director of women’s high performance. “We are excited to gather national and provincial coaches, technical leaders and mentors from across the country, all of whom are committed to the long-term development athletes in our Podium Pathway.”
The objective of the camp is to provide a national training environment with international focus to top identified athletes born in 1998 and later. At the camp, national team coaches, sports scientists and technical staff will identify athletes who will be invited to the next stage of the 2016 age-group programs.
This past summer, the U16/U17 women’s national team, won gold at the U16 FIBA Americas for Women, qualifying them for the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships in Spain.
The U18/U19 Women’s national team finished 8th at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships in Russia. This summer, athletes born during 1998 or later will participate in the 2016 U18 FIBA Americas.
Canada is currently ranked 4th overall in the FIBA Women’s Age-Group rankings.
