THE CANADIAN CLUB OF WINNIPEG PRESENTS
Dick Pound
“Dangerous Deceptions: Drug Use in Sport”
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Noon – 1:30 p.m.
Hotel Fort Garry – 222 Broadway Avenue
For more than 20 years, Dick Pound has been one of the most influential members of the International Olympic Committee.
A former vice president of the International Olympic Committee, Pound was also a double finalist in swimming at the 1960 Olympics in Rome and won gold, two silvers and a bronze medal for Canada at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Pound built the Olympics into a multi-billion dollar enterprise by branding and marketing the Olympic rings, and negotiating shrewd deals for television rights around the world. He has been the IOC's top TV rights and sponsorship negotiator since the 1980s. Under Pound's leadership, the IOC has grown into one of the richest sports organizations in the world.
On a mission to clean up drug use in sports, Pound recently retired after an 8 year term as head of the World Anti-Doping Agency from 1999 to end of 2007. His efforts have made him one of the most renowned and influential leaders in sports and in business. Often outspoken and unapologetic about his views on drug cheats, Pound is on a personal crusade to eradicate drug use in sports by getting sports, international bodies and governments to adopt the World Anti-Doping Code.
In 2005, Time Magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people for being the "prime mover in freeing the Olympic world from the taint of illicit, performance-enhancing drugs, and he isn't going to stop until he has all the world's sports in his tent.” In 2008 he was awarded the Laureus “Spirit of Sport” Prize for his work as head of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
An engaging statesman, negotiation genius and crisis management expert, Dick Pound is an intense public speaker.
