The first Wesmen Classic took place in 1967 under the watchful eye of Vic Pruden, who was the Wesmen Men's and Women's Basketball Coach and the founder of the Wesmen Classic (originally known as the Golden Boy Tournament).
The concept of a national university basketball tournament was very unique in the 1960's. Coach Vic Pruden's idea was readily supported by then University President Harry Duckworth and Athletic Director Dave Anderson. And the concept has been a success and has lasted for the past 42 years.
In the 1970's the Golden Boy Tournament became known as the Wesmen Classic to give the University of Winnipeg more exposure.
Over the past 42 years basketball fans from across the country have gathered at the old Riddell Hall gym, Winnipeg Arena, Convention Centre and for the past 20 years at the Duckworth Centre to witness some of the best basketball played in the country.
The Wesmen Classic has become the longest running university tournament in Canada. The Classic has featured some of the top university basketball players in Winnipeg. Great names from the past like Ken Opalko, Jeff Foreman, Norm Froemel and present day stars such as Erfan Nasajpour, Dan Shynkaryk and Matt Opalko have entertained basketball fans at the annual tournament.
The Wesmen Classic has been 'A Winnipeg Christmas Tradition" for 42 years. The University of Winnipeg invites all basketball fans and past participants to come down to the Duckworth Centre and celebrate 41 years of the Wesmen Classic.
