Three Winnipeg basketball players will be representing Canada when the
18th Maccabiah Games get underway in Israel on Sunday, July 12. The
Maccabiah Games is the fifth largest sporting event in the world. Recent high school graduates Gil Carroll (Grant Park) and Kevin Oman (U
of Wpg. Collegiate) made the boys national U-19 team at an open try out
last fall. They were the only players selected west of Ontario. Yael
Kaplan, entering grade 12 at Gray Academy and member of the Manitoba Canada Games team, was the only player west of
Ontario to make the girls national U-19 team. All three players are guards and all have played for the Jr. Wesmen.

The boys’ first game is July 12 against Australia. Other teams in the bracket are Israel, United States, Germany, Azerbaijan and Argentina. The girls’ first game is July 14 against Australia. Other teams in the bracket are Israel, United States and Great Britain.
