MANITOBA FEMALE
The Manitoba 17U Girls
are sending 12 athletes to the Canada Games this summer, 10 of whom
represented Manitoba at both National Championships last summer – 4
returning 17U athletes and 6 15U athletes. Veterans Stephanie
Kleysen (All-Manitoba team) and Britley Wermie were members of this
year’s MHSAA
Provincial Championship Vincent Massey Trojans which beat out last
year’s champs and Crocus Plains Plainsmen team member Tia Coulter, one
of the 15U team’s leaders from last summer. Siera Bubb and Carlene
Ilago, the other two returning juvenile athletes, are looking forward
to improving on last year’s finish in PEI. Yael Kaplan and Liz Simonsen
are the newest members of the juvenile program, Yael having
participated on the U16 developmental team last summer and Liz, having
led her Shaftesbury Titans to a Tier II championship this past season,
returns to the provincial team program after a summer off.
As for the returning 15U athletes, Brittany Koop (JV MVP) led her
River East Kodiaks team to the Junior Varsity Provincial Championship
this season, defeating team member Kenesha Giles (JV All-Star) and
alternate Raven Boulanger from the U of W Collegiate in a tough and
exciting final. Alex Warburton was a member of Sanford Collegiate’s
varsity team which placed 2nd in AAA provincials while 15U
provincial team starters Lauren Anderson and Cassandra Ordonez are
excited to bring their National Championships experience to the Canada
Games setting.
Having traveled to Chicago for the Summer Showcase tournament and
Minneapolis for the State Farm Greg Anderson Hoops Classic tournament,
head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul and assistant coaches Sarah (Holder)
Lundgren and JoAnne Wells are excited for the team’s ability to play an
exciting style basketball. Having had 10 of the 12 athletes train
within the Centre for Performance program this past school year has
helped develop the fundamentals and skills that will be required to
finish Top 5 @ Canada Games, which is the team’s goal this summer.
Transition basketball, everyone looking to score, tough Defense
and a love for the game are traits that the athletes and coaching staff
are looking forward to demonstrating this weekend in preparation for
the Canada Games being held in Summerside, PEI the week of August
16-22, 2009.

This year’s version of Team Manitoba Juvenile Boys
will be a hard-nosed, tough-minded group that will battle with anyone
in the country. With a good mixture of athleticism and skill, the team
should be able to play a variety of styles. The only two returning
players from last year’s team are Philip Labongo and Sean Allarie. They
will look to use their experience from last year to help this year’s
group reach their goals. Manitoba will look to Hudson Isaak and Anthony
Coombs to help these two with most of the ball handling duties. Keith
Omoerah, Marko Milosevic, Travis Krahn, will use their versatility to
provide match up problems for most teams. The athleticism of Joseph
Nitychoruk and Given Isaac will add the fast break and rebounding game.
David Kohler, Tanner Draward and Michael Thorne-Finch will control the
paint and take of the Boards
at both ends. If each piece does their job, this is a group that could
make some noise come Canada Games and may surprise some people.
Head Coach: Kirby Schepp Winnipeg
Asst Coach: Dean Favoni Winnipeg
Asst Coach: Jeff Laping Winnipeg
