The inaugural Basketball Manitoba Summer League tipped off on May 18 and 19 at the University of Manitoba IGAC. The new league features teams from the 17U Manitoba Provincial Team program along with summer teams from the U of Manitoba, U of Winnipeg, CMU, Red River and an 'All-Star Team'. Men's Summer League - May 19, 2010
In game one the 17U team played an excellent game and traded leads with the University of Manitoba until the second half when the experience of the herd put the game out of reach for the Manitoba Juvenile team in their first game of the summer. Sean Maxwell dropped in 5 three pointers and scored 18 points while Jonar Huertas and Marko Milosevic added 16 points a piece for the Bisons. Jordan Fotheringham scored 14 including 4 three pointers for Team Toba while Joey Nitychoruk added 12 points along with Jordan Kelly and A.J. Basi scoring 10 points each for the 17U team.
Game two saw a dominant University of Winnipeg team defeat the CMU Blazers 90-36. Nick Lother led the way for the Wesmen with 20 points. Erik Zimmerman, Mike James, and Given Isaac also hit double figures with 14, 13, and 11 respectively. For the Blazers Bol Majok and Tyler Stewart each scored 9 points.
Game three saw the University All-Stars explode late in the first half and blow open a tight game with the Red River Rebels. The All-Stars ran away with a 130-93 victory. Chris Dyck led the All-Stars with 20 points while Chad Posthumus and Xavier Smith scored 16 and 15 points respectively on a balanced score-sheet that saw 8 of the 10 All-Stars score in double figures. Anwar Ahmed scored a game high 28 points for the Rebels while Graham Fardoe splashed 6 triples adding 18 points to the Rebels total. Efran Nasajpour put on an assist clinic in limited minutes for the Red River team.
Women's Summer League - May 18, 2010
In the first game of round one the University of Manitoba defeated the 17U Team Manitoba team 69-47. The game was the first of the summer for the provincial team and they showed well early on but eventually the experience of the Bison team pushed them to victory. Kayla Klassen led the way for the Bison team with 20 points with Mubo Ilelaboye adding 15 points. Taneesha Greaves and Tia Coulter topped the 17U team with 8 and 7 points respectively.
The second game of the night saw the 17U Team Toba 2 squad defeat the Red River Rebels 69-42. Taneesha Greaves once again led the way with 17 points for the winners and Morgan Cross had 14 points for the Lady Rebels.
The last game of the night saw the University of Winnipeg with their strong recruiting class playing, defeat the CMU Blazers by a score of 100-49. Alex Maciver led the Wesmen with 24 points and Alyssa Grant added 18. Madison Bradbury led the Blazers with 14 points, while Carrera Lameroux and Chelsey Hiebert added 11 points and 10 points respectively.
