Reid.
Richter, Chhoeun Named Head Coaches
The University of Winnipeg is also pleased to announce that Grant
Richter and Suki Chhoeun have been named the
head coaches of the College Wesmen men’s and women’s basketball teams
respectively.
Grant Richter, will lead the men’s team, brings 26
years experience coaching basketball at different levels from junior
high, high school, Canadian University to professional. Last season
Richter was named the interim head coach of the Wesmen Basketball team
in January. He also spent three seasons as the head coach of the varsity
boy’s basketball team. Last season the team finished with a record of
28-2 and for the first time in the history of the Collegiate the team
was ranked in the top ten in the Provincial AAAA rankings. Richter spend
five seasons as a head coach (2001-2002) and assistant coach
(1997-2000) with the Winnipeg Cyclones of the International Basketball
Association. He gained a wealth of experience serving as an assistant
coach on Bill Wedlake’s Wesmen team from 1992-1998. Richter served as
head coach at Murdoch Mackay, Transcona and Bernie Wolfe high schools
from 1983-1998.
Leading the women’s team is Suki Chhoeun, a
graduate of Miles Macdonell, Chhoeun has been coaching since 2003. She
has been involved in a variety of basketball programs, including the
University Wesmen Women's team, Junior Wesmen Club program, TMO
Basketball school, Basketball Manitoba's Winnipeg Regional Training
Centre respectively and most recently, the Manitoba U15 Girls Provincial
team. Chhoeun has coached at the collegiate level for six years,
stemming at Miles Macdonell, Kildonan East and most recently, Vincent
Massey Collegiate (Wpg). Since 2008, she has helped steer the Vincent
Massey Trojans to back to back MHSAA provincial championships, in
addition she also is going into her 4th season as an assistant coach
with the Wesmen Women's basketball team. Chhoeun is a certified Level 3
coach through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), and
holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology of Applied Health &
Wellness from the University of Winnipeg.
