Basketball Manitoba, in partnership with the Manitoba Basketball Coaches Association and the Manitoba Sports writers and Sportscasters Association are proud to announce the details on a new scholarship based award for basketball. The Ron Meyers Memorial Leadership Award has been created in recognition of Ron’s outstanding support and leadership to the game
of basketball in the province. The Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association in partnership with the MBCA is proud to
recognize one outstanding male and one outstanding female grade 12 student who best meets the standards Ron Meyers set as a leader in the
community. The MSSA will be recognizing this achievement with a $500.00 scholarship to a male and female recipients to be used towards a
recognized post secondary institution the following year. All grade 12 basketball players in the province are welcome to apply including from
the A, AA, AAA and AAAA levels. For full details...
Ron was a longtime Manitoba provincial court judge who founded the domestic violence court and also found time to volunteer with numerous organizations including Rainbow Stage, the Winnipeg Press Club, the Red River Exhibition, and the Manitoba Bar Association’s annual fundraising show for the Manitoba Theater Centre. From the late 1950's to the mid 1970's, Ron Meyers wrote about basketball for The Winnipeg Tribune. Initially, he covered high school and university games. Later, he was also assigned to senior basketball. In those roughly 25 years, hardly a day went by without the Tribune publishing a basketball story under the Ron Meyers byline. Basketball has never been better served before or since the years Ron provided coverage. Ron Meyer's support of high school basketball earned him a special award in 1973 for outstanding contribution to basketball from the Manitoba Basketball Coaches' Association.
The Selection Committee will allot 3
points for leadership attributes, 2 points for basketball excellence and
1 point for academic achievements.
This new award will be added to the existing base of awards presented annually by the MBCA in April. The award deadline will be March 21, 2011.
