Sanford Sabres star Alex Warburton will be joining the Wesmen. Head
Coach Tanya McKay is pleased to announce that Warburton has committed to
joining the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball program
next September for the start of the 2011-2012 Canada West season. Warburton a 6’2 post is currently averaging 22 points,15 rebounds per
game and shooting 80% from the free throw line for the Sanford
Collegiate Varsity Girl’s Basketball team. At the 2009-2010 AAA
Provincial Championships, she averaged 28 points per game and was named a
Provincial All-Star after leading her team to a bronze medal.
Alex was named to the All-Manitoba team in 2009-2010 (1st team) and 2008-2009 (2nd team) as well as an AAA Provincial All-Star during those seasons. At Sanford she was honoured as the Varsity Girl’s Coach’s Award (2008-2009) and the Sabre’s Varsity Girl’s MVP (2009-2010). She was named an all-star at the Sabers Classic and Windsor Park Tournaments (2009-2010) and picked up MVP honours at the 2008-09 Sabres Classic Tournament. A four year member of the Manitoba Provincial Team, Warburton averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds this past summer.
She is currently averaging 97.5% and is a member of the schools honour roll.
Warburton and her Sanford Sabres team will be taking part in the Ranger Insurance High School Girl’s Classic that begins this evening at the Duckworth Centre. Sanford takes on the UWinnipeg Collegiate at 7:15 p.m. Oak Park plays Westwood in the early game at 5:30 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship final Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m.
