It is with great sadness that Basketball Manitoba shares the news of the
passing of long-time basketball supporter and media icon Jack Matheson. As sports editor for the Winnipeg Tribune for over twenty years, Jack
always made sure basketball was provided good coverage, particularly at the
local level. His first assignment as a cub sports reporter in 1946-47
was covering the seniors at the Y.M.C.A. As a sports reporter, Jack
covered the senior league and chronicled the rise of Carl Ridd and Roy
Williams from Gordon Bell to the 1952 Olympics.
Jack was also instrumental in the formation of the Junior
Men's League that produced national championship teams like the
Stellars and the Winnipeg Light Infantry. He also contributed to the Winnipeg Sun. The Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association presents the
Jack Matheson Award annually to students pursuing a career in sports
communications. In recognition of Jack's tremendous contribution to basketball over the years, he was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame as a Builder in 1985. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Matheson family.
