THE CANADIAN PRESS/HO-Sport ManitobaIn conjunction with the Stonewall Collegiate, the Manitoba Wheelchair Sport Association is holding a small fundraiser to help Kyle Bunskoek and his family with some of the financial burden placed on them through Kyle’s medication and nutritional needs.  This past February, Kyle was a member of the Provincial junior wheelchair basketball team that attended the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On day two of being at the games Kyle began to feel ill, with what he thought were cold like symptoms. Within a matter of hours Kyle’s symptoms began to worsen and things took a turn for the worse. After a trip to the polyclinic and to the emergency room Kyle was placed on a ventilator and it was discovered that Kyle was in complete kidney failure.  On May 18, 2011 at 5:00 pm there will be a wheelchair basketball demo at Stonewall Collegiate. This demo will be followed by a game between the students and the teachers. There will be a toonie admission fee as well as a silent auction and 50/50 draw, with all proceeds going to Kyle and his family.  For full details...

About Kyle:
Kyle Bunskoek is a 16 year old wheelchair basketball athlete and high school student from Stonewall Manitoba. Kyle has Cerebral Palsy and began playing wheelchair basketball at the age of 12.  Kyle’s father Wally Bunskoek flew out to Halifax to be with Kyle as his condition was so critical. After a week Kyle was able to fly home where he remained in the Children’s Hospital for a short time. Kyle now goes to dialysis three days a week for four hours per session. Kyle’s kidneys are not functioning at all and Kyle is waiting for a kidney transplant.  Kyle is currently finishing grade 11 on his own at home because of the physical strain of the dialysis. Kyle hopes to return to playing wheelchair basketball after he receives a transplant but in the meantime is getting into coaching.
