The University of Winnipeg will be the best place to get your basketball game on this summer, as the University plays host to the Summer in the City Basketball Tournament, June11, 2011. The event is a fundraiser in support of the Inner City Junior Wesmen program, which was founded in 2007 and now attracts about 40 neighbourhood girls to play basketball at the Duckworth Centre. This year the program expanded to include three boys teams. Currently there are 80-90 kids involved, aged 14-18. The Inner City Wesmen program is funded through private donations and support from Wesmen Athletics.
Taking place indoors at the Duckworth Centre, the Summer in the City event features a skills competition and, of course, a top-notch three-on-three basketball tournament for participants of all ages.
“Tournaments like this and the Heart of the City event we held earlier this year are key to developing meaningful programs for inner-city kids,” said Bob Axworthy, Inner City Junior Wesmen coach and tournament organizer. “We invite everyone to come out, have some fun and support a worthwhile program at the same time.”
The action gets underway on Saturday, June 11 at 9:00 am with a survivor skills basketball competition on Spence Street that is open to all competitors. The skill challenges include two minutes of rapid shooting, two minutes of speed layups, free-throw shooting and a dribble maze.
The three-on-three competition begins Saturday, June 11 at 10:00 am with games for boys and girls in the 8-17 year-old categories as well.
