Basketball Manitoba is very excited to announce that Rick Torbett has been confirmed to headline at this fall's Super Coaches Clinic scheduled for October 19-20 at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Rick is best known for his very popular 'Better Basketball' instructional basketball videos and will join NBA strength and conditioning specialist Allan Stein this fall.  The Atlanta, Georgia native is often regarded as among the best teachers of basketball in the world today. His lead role in the Better Basketball videos is one of the reasons they've achieved such a high level of value to coaches everywhere. Coach Torbett strives to make even the most advanced techniques so easy to understand that even very young players grasp them quickly and apply those systems to their own game.  Coach Torbett’s techniques have been proven to surpass those of coaches whose teams are in the NBA. For example, in the last six seasons only two NBA teams averaged over 40% from the 3-point line. Coach Torbett managed to coach entire teams to shoot over 40% for three consecutive seasons – a stunning achievement in or out of pro ball.  Coach Torbett spent 24 years as a high school coach with an overall winning percentage of 70% at four different schools, helping players earn scholarships to premier collegiate programs. He’s since devoted himself to traveling the world to study more sophisticated coaching techniques and to garner even more knowledge about how to better play the game of basketball.  More information on Rick and his products can be found at www.betterbasketball.com.  More details on the Super Coaches Clinic will be announced later this summer!  Watch all past Super Coaches Clinic video presentations at...

Basketball Manitoba was pleased to contribute financially to the life-sized statue of Dr. James Naismith which was unveiled in his hometown of Almonte, Ontario in July of 2011.  The larger-than-life statue of the inventor of basketball was a task which took two years for one man to see reach fruition.  The bronze statue, which is one-and-a-quarter sizes bigger than Naismith, honors the man responsible for inventing one of the world's most popular sports.  The commemoration comes more than 100 years after Naismith laid the foundations for the present-day game.  Having the statue erected in the Ottawa valley town was the work of Manitoba native and member of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame (Class of '98), Allen Rae, president of the Naismith Basketball Foundation.  Although the first game of basketball was played in December, 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and is hugely popular in the United States, Allen still maintains that the game holds firm its Canadian beginnings.  The sculpture was crafted by U.S. sculptor Elden Tefft, at a cost of about $50,000.
A similar one was unveiled at Springfield College last year.   To see more photos of the statue...

Brandon Bobcats men’s basketball coach Gil Cheung has started to reload after graduating two key players from this past season. The Bobcats lose fifth year starters Kyle Vince and Donovan Gayle, so Cheung has signed his first two recruits of the 2012-2013 season, both of which play a similar style to the pair they are replacing.  Peterson Suffrard and Jude Molin, both of Montreal, have signed letters of intent to join the Bobcats for the upcoming season. Although the two are from the same city, that is where the similarities end, especially on the basketball court.  Suffrard plays a similar game to Gayle, but in a much bigger body. Suffrard is a 6-foot-7, 276 pound forward who is known for using his big body to bruise in the paint. Molin is a 6-foot-4, 190 pound forward who shares some of the same traits as Vince; a tireless work ethic and the ability to excel at the perimeter.
