The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and Women’s Basketball head coach Tanya McKay are pleased to announce the commitment of Taylor Thorkelsson to the Women’s Basketball Program for the start of the 2012-2013 Canada West season starting in September. Thorkelsson a 5’10 forward from Dakota Collegiate averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds and three steals per game for the Lancers during the 2011-2012 season. She was named an all-star at numerous tournaments including the Pembina Trails, St. Vital, Sisler, Oak Park and Notre Dame Invitational Exhibition Tournament (Calgary) this past season. Taylor was named the Home Run Sports Urban Athlete of the Week (February 28, 2012).
She has been a member of the Manitoba Juvenile Provincial team for the past two summers along side fellow Wesmen recruits Lauren Anderson, Kerri Kuzbyt and Megan Noonan. Coach McKay who served as the Provincial Coach for the past two years states “Taylor was the most improved player with the juvenile program. The progress she made as an athlete and basketball player was outstanding. Her skill set improved very quickly as she was playing with the best players in Manitoba”.
A multi sport talent she also competes in volleyball, badminton, soccer, track & field, cross country and handball. She will graduate from Dakota Collegiate with an academic average of 96%.
“Taylor brings a strong work ethic and the potential to be a solid forward at the university level. She can post up, hit the three and drive to the net. She has a nose for the ball so we expect she will be someone we can depend on to track rebounds. She will be a great addition to our strong recruiting class and the future of our program”, said Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay.
