Basketball Manitoba is pleased to share the news that long-time basketball coach and administrator Bill Wedlake will be part of the 2013 induction class of the Manitoba Sport Hall of Fame in the Builder category. Bill coached basketball for over 30 years at the high school and university levels and his teams compiled more than 650 wins. While coaching at the University of Winnipeg (1984-2000) he won the CIS Coach of the Year in 1992-93. He went on to serve as Athletic Director at the U of W from 2000-2008. A co-founder of the Winnipeg Invitational Tournament (WIT) in 1976 he has also served as President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Canada, Basketball Manitoba, and the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA). He also took charge of volunteers at the 1999 Pan Am Games and 1990 Western Canada Games. He was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005 and joins the Class of other notable members of the sport community including Winnipeg Jet legend Dale Hawerchuk and pro-baseball player Corey Koskie. On November 2, 2013, four athletes, two builders, one all rounder and two teams will be inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame at the 34th Annual Induction Ceremonies presented by RBC Royal Bank.
This year’s individual recipients in the Athlete category include a Winnipeg Jets’ legend, an Olympic swimmer, a true all round athlete and a home-grown major league baseball player. Our Builders are a pioneer of curling and a basketball coaching legend. The All Round category includes our first inductee from the sport of table tennis and the Team category has 3-time Brier champs and a Manitoba senior baseball dynasty.

The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has inducted 459 members since it was established in 1980. “These nine recipients join an exclusive group of Manitoba’s finest in sport,” says Don Pincock, President of the Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors. “We strive to celebrate the heritage of sport excellence and achievement and these seven individuals and two teams have earned their place in Manitoba’s sport history. It is an exceptional slate for 2013.”
