The team will be representing the country this summer at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women in Lithuania. Toronto, Ont. – Canada Basketball is pleased to announce the athletes who will represent Canada as the Junior Women’s National Team (JWNT).
Head coach Rich Chambers of Port Moody, B.C. spoke to the ability and quality of the under-19 age-group when asked about the 2013 squad. "We had seventeen very talented players come into camp and it was a very competitive and difficult selection process. From a positive perspective, it is good for Canada Basketball that athletes have to play well in a very pressured situation to make the National Team. All the girls that were invited into camp came in extremely fit with many of the players reaching their personal best in various areas of physical testing. Everyone is working hard to get ready for both the exhibition schedule in Europe and the World Championship in Lithuania."
Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. forward Anna-Lee Policicchio was selected to the team’s final roster, but was forced to withdraw due to injury. The competition, taking place in the host cities of Klaipeda and Panevezys, will feature the best under-19 teams from across the globe as they chase the title of world champion. The JWNT will face Senegal, the Netherlands and France in the preliminary round of the tournament.
