(Winnipeg Free Press) Basketball icon Magic Johnson will take a star turn in Winnipeg next summer, delivering the keynote speech at the 42nd annual "Y" Sports Dinner. Johnson, a five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers and a member of the American "Dream Team" at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, will speak at the June 19 Convention Centre gala, which will raise money for scholarships and programs at the Rady JCC.
After his stratospheric basketball success, Johnson became one of the most famous people to go public with an HIV diagnosis, which helped turn the tide of stigma against people living with HIV. Since then, he has become a vocal advocate of HIV prevention and awareness, and has championed development programs in poor urban neighbourhoods.
