47th Wesmen Classic

Winnipeg 73 Manitoba 61 [Semi-Final]

Justus Alleyn, Mike Holloway (Manitoba) 12 points

The host team will play for the 47th Annual Wesmen Classic University Men’s Championship. The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated their cross town rivals the University of Manitoba Bisons 73-61 in the semi finals Sunday evening. Guard Sam Hattin led the Wesmen with a game high 18 points, including four-three pointers. Andrew Cunningham added 13 points and dished out seven assists. Ryan Oirbans led the Wesmen in rebounds with 10. Manitoba was led by Justus Alleyn and Mike Holloway each scoring 12 points. Dan Penner added 11 and a team high six rebounds. Manitoba had the advantage early on leading 15-13 after the opening t10 minutes. Winnipeg responded in a big way outscoring the Bisons 22-12 in the second quarter to carry a 35-27 lead into the halftime break. Winnipeg carried their momentum into the second half outscoring the Bisons 38-33 to make the final tally 73-61 and earn a trip to the Championship Final. Winnipeg will take on the Ottawa Gee-Gee’s in Monday’s Final with tip off scheduled for
8:00 p.m. Manitoba will play Regina in the third place game at 4:00 p.m.


Ottawa 90 Regina 75 [Semi–Final]

Caleb Agada (Ottawa) – Player of the Game

The University of Ottawa Gee-Gee’s advanced to the championship final of the 2013 Coca Cola Wesmen Classic with a 90-75 semi final victory over the Regina Cougars. Ottawa went into the halftime break leading 45-34 but took control in the third quarter scoring 32 points while holding the Cougars to 19 in the frame. Ottawa went into the final quarter with a commanding 77-53 lead and never looked back. Johnny Berhaneemeskel led Ottawa with 22 points including four-three pointers. Caleb Agada added 18 and five assists. Terry Thomas was next scoring 16. The Cougars were led by Darius Mole and Brandon Tull each scoring 11 points. Ottawa will face Winnipeg in the Championship Final Monday night at 8:00 p.m. Regina will face Manitoba in the third place game at 4:00 p.m.


Valley City State 80 Lakeland College 65 [Consolation Semi-Final]

AJ McDonald (Valley City State) 19 points – Player of the Game

Steven Jones (Lakeland College) 19 points

The Valley City State University Vikings gained a spot in the University Consolation Final at the Wesmen Classic after posting a 80-65 victory over the Lakeland College Rustlers. The Vikings erased a 36-32 halftime deficit after outscoring the Rustlers 38-29 in the second half. AJ McDonals led the Vikings with 19 points and six assists. Mac Kroeplin added 15 and Jeremy Ware was next with 14. The Rustlers were led by Steven Jones who finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. KJ McGraw finished with 11. Valley City State will face Brandon in the Consolation Final Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Lakeland will face Dickinson State in the 7th Place game at 12:00 p.m.


Brandon 67 Dickinson State 54 [Consolation Semi-Final]

Kenonte Ramsey (Brandon) 20 points – Player of the Game

Mackenson Odenier (Dickinson State) 14 points

The Brandon University Bobcats advanced to the Consolation Final of the University Men’s Wesmen Classic with a 67-54 victory over the Dickinson State University Bluehawks. Fourth year guard Kenonte Ramsey led the Bobcats with 20 points, including six-three pointers. A.M. Benabdelhak added 17 points and a team high nine rebounds. Mackenson Odenier led the Bluehawks with a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds. Dickinson State led the contest 15-12 after the opening quarter but Brandon responded in the second quarter outscoring Dickinson State 16-9 to open up a 28-24 lead at halftime. Brandon maintained their lead in the second half and went on for the 67-54 victory. Brandon will face the winner of the Lakeland College/Valley City semi final in the Consolation Final Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

University Women's Game Results


Winnipeg 94 Dickinson St. 80 [Exhibition]

Stephanie Kleysen (Winnipeg) 23 points – Player of the Game

TaRicka Linzy, Jess Bygate (Dickinson State) 14 points


The veteran duo of Stephanie Kleysen and Alyssa Grant combined for 45 points to help the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 94-80 victory over the Dickinson State University Bluehawks. Kleysen, a fourth year guard had a double-double consisting of 23 points and 12 rebounds. Grant,
a fifth year forward scored 22 points, including four-three pointers. Danielle Baril and Taylor Thorkelsson each added 12. The Bluehawks were led by TaRicka Linzy and Jess Bygate each scoring 14 points. Dawn Degel hauled in a game high 13 rebounds. A hot shooting Wesmen team connected on 53% from the field in the opening half and went into the halftime break leading 44-36. Winnipeg continued their strong shooting in the second half exploding for 50 points to make the final score 94-80. Winnipeg won the opening game of the weekend series Saturday afternoon by a margin of 61-53. Winnipeg will resume their Canada West Conference schedule at home on January 10th against Fraser Valley.

Varsity Boy's Game Results


47th Wesmen Classic

Garden City 85 Kelvin 64 [Semi-Final]

Byron Oduca (Garden City) 27 points – Player of the Game

Ivan Paskvalin 22 points

The three-time defending Wesmen Classic High School Boy’s champions will have a chance to make it four in a row. The Garden City Fighting Gophers defeated the Kelvin Clippers 85-64 in the semi finals of the High School Boy’s Wesmen Classic. Byron Oduca led the Fighting Gophers with a game high 27 points, including four-three pointers. Jowel Shuffler was next with 16. Kelvin was led by Ivan Paskvalin’s 22 points. Garden City held a nine point advantage at 46-37 at halftime but broke the game open in the second half outscoring the Clippers 39-26 in
the final 20 minutes. Garden City will face MBCI in Monday’s Championship Final. Game time is 6:00 p.m.


Sturgeon Heights 62 Maples 51 [Consolation Semi-Final]

Will Switzer (Sturgeon Heights) 16 points – Player of the Game

Jaired Garing (Maples) 12 points

The Sturgeon Heights Huskies advanced to the Consolation Final of the High School Boy’s Wesmen Classic with a 62-51 victory over the Maples Marauders. Will Switzer led the Huskies with 16 points followed by Roan Van Eerd with 12. Jaired Garing led the Marauders with 12 points while Matt Dunning finished with 10. The Huskes went into the halftime break with a slim 30-26 lead .Sturgeon Heights will face John Taylor in the Consolation Final Monday morning at 8:00 a.m.
