Basketball Manitoba is very disappointed to share the news that local basketball player, Erfan Nasajpour has been declared ineligible to participate in the 2014 FIBA World Cup scheduled to begin Saturday in Spain. Earlier this week, Nasajpour was announced as part of the Iranian National Team roster and was to compete in this year's FIBA World Cup. Basketball Manitoba has since learned that due to an eligibility technicality, Erfan will not be suiting up in the championships.
Nasajpour had played for Team Canada a decade ago and a number of transfer processes were to be fulfilled by a set deadline to ensure Erfan became eligible to compete for his birth country. Unfortunately, these were not met in time.
Basketball Manitoba Executive Director Adam Wedlake commented, "We are very disappointed to learn of Erfan's fate at this summer's World Cup. He is a great basketball ambassador for Manitoba and him not participating in the premier world basketball event of the year at the pinnacle of his basketball career is totally heartbreaking."
