At a recent Basketball Manitoba Board of Directors Meeting, a new policy was passed tied to basketball player camps hosted in Manitoba and the requirement that all camps that are to be advertised on the Basketball Manitoba website must have an accident and/or liability insurance plan in place effective January 1, 2017.
In 2015, Basketball Manitoba introduced its Camp Insurance Program opportunity to all camp operators in Manitoba to consider offering as part of their camp features. Typically, the insurance premium per camper sits at $1 per day. Most camps offered are usually 3-5 days in length, so that would me a premium of $3-$5 per camper for the coverage.
The coverage provided by Basketball Manitoba includes protection for situations involving an accident and assistance of up to $2000.00 per incident to cover rehabilitation costs not already covered by Manitoba Health. These typically involve ones tied to doctor prescribed physiotherapy, athletic therapy, chiropractor, massage therapy, osteopath, pharmaceutical and ambulance costs. The coverage also includes all registered coaches who are working at the camp (no additional premium for coaches to be covered) as well as up to $5,000,000 in liability coverage for everyone involved including the facility. Many facility owners are now asking for proof of such coverage for a outside group being granted use of the venue.
Beginning in 2017, all basketball camps operators seeking to promote their camps on the Basketball Manitoba website must either opt into the Basketball Manitoba Camp Insurance Program or provide proof of other similar coverage they may already hold from another insurance provider.
