50th Wesmen Classic

Lakehead 67 Brandon 47 [Consolation Semi-Final]

The Lakehead University Thunderwolves regrouped from a heart breaking quarter final loss to defeat the Brandon University Bobcats 67-47 in the consolation semi final round at the 50th Annual Wesmen Classic.Fourth year guard and Player of the Game Mor Menashe led the Thunderwolves with 16 points. Fifth year forward Bacarius Dinkins finished with a double-double 13 points, 10 rebounds.Pookie Saunders, Christopher Stanhope and John Paul each scored six points for the Bobcats.  Both teams struggled finding their mark in the opening half as both sides shot 27% from the field. Lakehead went into the halftime break with a 28-25 lead.  Lakehead found their offensive game in the third quarter connecting on 10-of-20 from the field while the Bobcats shooting woes continued. Brandon was 4-of-14 from the field as the Thunderwolves outscored Brandon 25-11 to carry a 53-36 lead into the fourth quarter.

Lakehead will play the winner of the Algoma-Regina matchup in the Consolation Final, Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Brandon will play the loser in the 7th place game at 12:00 p.m.


Regina 78 Algoma 74 [Consolation Semi-Final]

Fourth year guard Alex Igual recorded a double-double to lead the University of Regina Cougars to a 78-74 victory over the Algoma University Thunderbirds in the consolation semifinal round at the 50th Annual Wesmen Classic.  Igual scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists. He was named the Player of the Game for his performance.  Brian Ofori scored 15 points for the Cougars followed by Brandon Tull with 11.  Algoma had four players scoring in double-digits led by the duo of Callum White and Sean Clendinning each scoring 12. Adam Benrabah had 11 followed by Jermaine Lyle with 10. The Thunderbirds had the early advantage in the opening half outscoring the Cougars 44-41. The Cougars connected on 17-of-33 (51%) from the field in the opening half, including draining five-three pointers.  After both teams scored 15 points in the third quarter, 
Regina made their move in the fourth quarter outscoring the Thunderbirds 22-15 for the comeback 78-74 victory.  

Regina will face Lakehead in the Consolation Final Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Algoma will face Brandon in the 7th place game scheduled for 12:00 p.m.


Manitoba 60 Winnipeg 55 [Semi-Final]

The University of Manitoba Bisons will have the opportunity to defend their Wesmen Classic championship. Manitoba posted a 60-55 victory over their cross town rivals University of Winnipeg Wesmen in Thursday's semifinal at the Duckworth Centre.  Manitoba will face the winner of the Alberta-Victoria matchup in the Championship Final Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. Winnipeg will play the loser in the third place game Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  Fourth year guard Keith Omoerah led the Bisons with a double-double consisting of 17 points and 25 rebounds. Omoerah's 25 boards is a new Wesmen Classic single game rebounding record breaking the old mark of 20 set by Kenneth McCoy (Minot State) back in 2009.  AJ Basi scored 14 points while Ilarion Bonhomme finished with 10.  First year guard Narcisse Ambanza led Winnipeg with 15 points. Ryan Oirbans scored eight points and hauled down 14 rebounds. Will Sesay added eight points and 10 rebounds.  Winnipeg came out on fire building a 10-4 lead three minutes into the first quarter. Manitoba regrouped soon after going on a 9-2 run to take a 13-12 lead with 1:35 left. Omoerah's three pointer at the buzzer gave the Bisons a 19-14 lead after the opening quarter.  Both teams struggled to find their offensive touch in a low scoring second quarter. Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 13-10 to take a 32-24 lead into the halftime break.  Winnipeg got back into the game at the midway point of the third quarter. Sparked by three pointers by Jamar Farley and Billy Yaworsky, the Wesmen scored eight unanswered points to tie the score at 38-38. Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 7-4 down the stretch to take a 45-42 lead into the final quarter.  A Winnipeg 9-0 run to start the fourth propelled the Wesmen to a 51-45 lead. Manitoba reeled off nine unanswered points of their own, six on back to back three pointers by Bonhomme to take a 54-51 lead. Winnipeg clawed their way back to within one 56-55 with 43 seconds left. Basi drained a pair of free throws soon after to give Manitoba a 58-55 lead with 12 seconds left. After a Wesmen timeout, Jamar Farley's three point attempt hit the rim with five seconds left spoiling Winnipeg's opportunity to tie the game. A pair of Bison free throws closed out the 60-55 contest.


Alberta 82 Victoria 76 [Semi-Final]

The University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated the University of Victoria Vikes 82-76 in semi final action at the 50th Annual Wesmen Classic.  Alberta will move on to face Manitoba in the Championship Final Friday evening at 8:00 p.m.  Mamadou Gueye led Alberta with 21 points. Player of the Game Austin Waddoups finished with 19 points, including five-three pointers and six assists. Brody Clarke finished with a double-double 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Grant Sitton and Wayne Tucker Jr each scored 15 points for the Vikes. Hassan Abdullahi finished with 13.  Alberta had the early advantage jumping out to a 39-32 lead at the halftime break. Both teams had success from three point territory with the Golden Bears draining seven in the opening half and the Vikes connecting on six in the opening 20 minutes.  Victoria came out of the halftime break on fire outscoring Alberta 24-15 to carry a slim 56-54 lead into the final quarter. Alberta regained the lead for good in the final frame, outscoring the Vikes 28-20 to close out the 82-76 victory.  Alberta had a slim advantage 
on the boards by a margin of 42-40. Victoria finished the contest with 13 three-pointers, Alberta finished with 12.

Victoria will face the Winnipeg Wesmen in the 3rd place game Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Metro News Classic [Wesmen Classic]

Vincent Massey 64 Sturgeon Heights 53 [Consolation Semi-Final]

The Vincent Massey Trojans have advanced to the Consolation Final of the Metro News High School Boys Classic with a 64-53 win over the Sturgeon Heights Huskies. Led by 16 points in the first half by Player of the Game Donald Stewart, the Trojans jumped out to a 39-28 lead after 20 minutes. The Huskies would battle back to within six after three quarters, holding the Trojans to nine points; however Vincent Massey would put it away comfortably in the fourth for the win. Stewart would finish the game with 26 points on 11/15 shooting. Kyler Filewich finished with a double-double of 12 points and 21 rebounds. DeMar Kraus led the way for Sturgeon Heights with 16 points.

The Trojans advance to Friday's Consolation Final against the Fort Richmond Centurions. Tip-off is set for 8:00 a.m.


Dakota 72 Garden City 50 [Semi-Final]

The Dakota Lancers advanced to the Championship Final of the Metro Times High School Boy's Classic with a 72-50 semifinal victory over the Garden City Fighting Gophers Thursday afternoon. Dakota will face the Sisler Spartans in the Championship Final that will take place Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.  The Lancers put on an offensive display in the opening half by jumping out to a 41-16 lead. The struggling Fighting Gophers could not get on track in the opening half. Garden City finished the half 6-of-43 (14%) from the field. Dakota put the game out of reach in the second quarter, outscoring Garden City 27-6.
Garden City made a brief run in the third quarter but was unable to make up the deficit in the 72-50 decision.  Game MVP Aliou Sesay led the Lancers with a game high 30 points while grabbing a team high nine rebounds. Connor Kyliuk also finished in double digits with 11 points.  Cole Penner led Garden City in scoring with 13 points, including three-three pointers. Miguel Guevarra added 11 points. Tyrece Viner-Cox led Garden City with 15 rebounds.

Garden City will face John Taylor in the 3rd place game Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
