Frances Lerma and Katelin Thiessen recently helped Sprague’s Ross L. Gray Raiders win a third successive A-level Provincial championship. Starting next season the long-time friends and teammates will be hoping to replicate that success with the Providence Pilots women’s basketball team.
Lerma, a 5’7” guard from Middlebro, signed her letter of intent at Providence last week. The commitment ensures she’ll continue to play with Thiessen, who put pen to paper for the Pilots back in November.
“Both players are excited after winning another provincial championship for their school, and they’ll now move on and play college basketball together,” says head coach Joel Coursey. “Frances can do more than shoot the ball. She is a hardnosed player who does the intangible things. She comes from a program that knows how to win and I believe she’ll bring that competitive edge with her to Providence.”
Lerma, a provincial champion at both varsity and junior varsity levels, is also a two-time provincial all-star.
“I’m excited to add Frances to our team,” says Coursey. “I think she’ll fit in well with the players I have coming back and will be able to help our program move forward.”
