Run Rabbit Run is a perfect game to incorporate into warm-ups or as a fun break between drills. It’s a great way to help improve speed and change of direction for young athletes and takes minimal time to set up and explain.
First off, divide players into 2 groups, lined up at opposite baselines. Select 1 player to start as Rabbit (starting at one free-throw line) and 1 player to start as Chaser (starting at the same-side baseline). Refer to the “X” players in Figure 1 below for a visualization.
On the whistle, the Rabbit runs to the opposite baseline with the Chaser chasing them. When the Chaser reaches the opposite free-throw line, they become the new Rabbit, who changes direction to the opposite baseline. The next player in the line closest becomes the new Chaser, chasing the new Rabbit (see Figure 2). The drill continues until everyone has had a turn to be the Rabbit.
Coaches can use this game as an opportunity to teach athletes to plant their foot, get low, drop their hips, and explode to change directions. This will help establish the strength and ability to react to transition opportunities and changes of possession in a game setting.
Most importantly, have fun with it! This is a perfect game to infuse some energy into your session – the thrill of chasing teammates back and forth will create enthusiasm that you can carry over to the rest of your practice.
