Sports help children develop competence, confidence, connections, character, and care – which will also help with academic success! Sports can also feed your muscle memory and your brain by helping improve your attention, information processing, and memory.

With kids getting a little more settled into school now, they may have their routine down pat! As a parent, you want to make sure your child is using their time efficiently. Have a set time for them to focus on their academics, a time for them to have fun and be active, and of course a reasonable time for bed! Being active can be practice time, game time, or simply going to the park.

How does your child balance school and sports? Here are some tips to ensure your child can handle both…

Prioritize what’s important!
Put school first, because having a good education will prepare you for success throughout your life no matter how far you go in sport. Encourage your child to write a list of what needs to be done first when it comes to schoolwork. Find ways to fit in more time for sleep and recovery between practice time and game time as well!

Stay motivated!
Constantly motivate your child, remind your child how much they love sports, and how important it is to be able to balance their academics and sports. It’ll all be worth it in the end!

Don’t stress!
Find ways to relieve stress, whether that’s going outside for a bike ride, run, or meditating! See what suits your child best when it comes to coping with stress.

Ask for help.
Let your child know that it’s ok to ask for help whenever they need to! No one should ever feel unsure.

Don’t procrastinate!
Remind your child that time management is key! Procrastination will lead to a snowball effect, causing a large increase in stress. Prevent procrastination as much as possible, that way there’s more time for sports!

Have fun!
Having fun in the end is all that matters, right?

School can be a little stressful, so sports can definitely take the mind off things! Playing sports can be an amazing stress reliever for some people, which in turn works out for them because they are helping their brain health and their heart health too!
