Ever wonder how Stephen Curry’s hand-eye coordination got so good? During some of his training routines, he would use more than just 1 basketball to focus on multiple things at once. In this drill, we’ll introduce a basic version of what Steph does, but at much simpler scale that will help improve the athlete’s coordination and hand speed.
In this drill, you’ll need tennis balls and basketballs. Have the players find space throughout the gym with a tennis ball in their hands.
DESCRIPTION |
- Have players go through a series of tennis ball coordination exercises
- Add a basketball to be dribbled for added difficulty, in this case, have players remain primarily focused on the tennis ball
(see Suggestions below for different exercises)

SUGGESTIONS | Without a Basketball:
- Throw the ball up in the air and clap as many times before catching it again
- Throw the ball in the air with one hand and catch with the other, while clapping
- Throw the ball in the air and clap in front of your body and behind your back until the ball comes down to be caught
- Throw the ball up in the air clap once in front of your body and one under each leg before catch
- Throw the ball up in the air and catch behind your back
With a Basketball:
- While dribbling the basketball in one hand, throw the tennis ball up into the air and catch it
- While dribbling, throw the tennis ball into the air and catch it with the other hand. This will require crossing the ball over
- Throw the tennis ball up in the air, perform a double cross, and catch the ball again (same hand)
