The following is a statement from Wesmen Athletics:
After being forced to take a year off from the Wesmen Classic in 2020, there was nothing we wanted more this holiday season than to return with the tournament that means so much to so many.
We looked forward to the chance to reboot the Classic with men’s basketball back in the spotlight, reuniting friends, fans, athletes, and coaches while celebrating one of the great sporting traditions in Winnipeg.
However, given new provincial regulations announced late Friday and our desire to conduct our operations with health and safety in mind, we are forced to make the unenviable decision to cancel this year’s Wesmen Classic.
We were excited to bring teams from across five provinces, to once again add to our Ring of Honour, and to gather our tremendous alumni from across generations of Wesmen Basketball.
While it hurts us to have to make this decision, we pledge to return in 2022 with the same optimism, the same passion, and the same spirit of celebration we were so looking forward to putting on display this December.
For now, we all must do what we can to keep each other safe and persevere through this stretch of uncertainty.
