Basketball Manitoba would like to acknowledge the accomplishments of female basketball players, recognize the influence of women leaders, and advocate on equity for women and girls in sports. Women in sport should be celebrated year-round for the legacy and impact they have left and continue to create for young girls.

Basketball Manitoba is excited to introduce a new weekly social media initiative called "Women in Basketball Wednesdays." This feature will showcase various coaches, officials, board members, league coordinators, and volunteers that make up our basketball community.

Starting on Wednesday, March 9th, 2022 and every Wednesday after that, Basketball Manitoba will be posting one individual to feature on our social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter).

If you would like to nominate an influential female coach, official, league coordinator, or volunteer, for this type of recognition, please contact Tiffany at tiffany@basketballmanitoba.ca.

Women in Basketball Wednesday - Arlyn Filewich

Arlyn Filewich brings a vast array of experiences in basketball, spanning more than 40 years. Arlyn is a former player, having played basketball in Manitoba at the Junior High, High School, University and Provincial team levels. She has fond memories of playing for Basketball Manitoba at the 1987 and 1989 Canada Games and on other provincial teams between 1985-1993. She also represented Canada Basketball as a member of the National B team in 1987 and on the National Junior team in 1988. Arlyn was an integral member of the VMC Trojan Girls powerhouse teams of 1986- 1988 that was inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Following her 5 year playing career as a U of M Bison, Arlyn began her teaching and coaching career at Fort Richmond Collegiate, where she coached Varsity Boys, Girls and JV Girls and at her local community club with Junior Bisons for over 25 years.

Now, married 28 years to a fellow Bison basketball player Keon Filewich and as a parent of their three children, Arlyn's greatest joy is watching the game of basketball as a fan! Daughter Keylyn plays for the U of W Wesmen and is the reigning Canada West Player of the Year and a 3-time All-Canadian. Son Kyler is playing D1 Basketball at Southern Illinois University, where he was a member of the MVC All-Freshman team last season. Daughter McKenna is a U of M student and former volleyball player.

Arlyn works as the Department Head of Teacher Welfare at the Manitoba Teachers' Society, where she advocates and bargains for Manitoba's 16,000 public school teachers.
