The CMU Men's Basketball program has announced the commitment of George Fedorchuk for the 2022-23 MCAC and NIAC seasons. The local Oak Park and Central Canada Prep product will bring a scoring touch to the Blazers when he joins the squad for the upcoming season.
A 2021 graduate from Oak Park High, Fedorchuk has been keeping his skills sharp this past year since his high school graduation with Central Canada Prep based out of the University of Winnipeg, and got his first look at the CMU squad last season when the team had an exhibition with the Blazers. Fedorchuk also trained with the Wesmen throughout the 2021-22 season, allowing him to bring his game up to the college level.
The 6'3" shooting guard also has experience playing at the small forward position and shouldn't be classified as only an offensive threat, having received the defensive player of the tournament award at the Winnipeg Invitational Tournament (WIT) held at Tec Voc in his final season of high school basketball. His Oak Park Raiders won that tournament over the Miles Mac Buckeyes in the finals, where Fedorchuk dropped 23 points in the win. The newest Blazer attributes much of his development on the court to his high school coach Jon Lundgren, who has created a very successful program that routinely churns out top players from the city.
Pulled into club basketball by his high school teammate Parker Hamlin, who will now join the Blazers as the second signing of the week for head coach Scott Martin, Fedorchuk began his club career during his grade eight season with Team Flex. That team later merged and became Crossover, with whom he played the rest of his club eligibility before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He was named team captain of that squad under head coach Ricardo Martinez, and captured the 2019 Peg City Ball Championship with a win over the Bisons that required a 20-point comeback in the finals to take the title.
The Central Canada Prep signing got his first taste of CMU basketball through exhibitions against the team last season, and despite an offer from another CCAA college in Alberta, he preferred to stay at home in Manitoba, where he will be studying psychology and the social sciences while playing at CMU. The opportunity to continue his development in Winnipeg was also heavily influenced by Hamlin, who played all their high school, club, and prep ball together. "Parker and I have been talking about it for the last couple of months, and we're both excited to take it to the next level and tear up the MCAC and NIAC from the backcourt with the Blazers," stated Fedorchuk about his decision to join the green and gold. Blazers coach Scott Martin is pumped to have Fedorchuk join his team as one part of a dynamic duo noting, "George is an outstanding three-point shooter, and we'll be counting on him to be a scorer for us. He's received great coaching at Oak Park under Jon Lundgren, as well as at CC prep under Nick Lother, so I'm excited to see what he can do in our system."
Following their MCAC Basketball Championships Finals appearance this past March, the Blazers will set their sights on a return to the provincial championships next season. With border crossing regulations and restrictions to the states eased, CMU is poised to rejoin the NIAC conference next season in a condensed format with matchups against the other private colleges in the league that includes teams from Minnesota as well as North and South Dakota before a championship tournament in the Twin Cities to cap off the year.
