Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Bill Wedlake.
A legend in the Basketball Manitoba Community, Bill started his basketball journey at St. John’s High School as a player and then went on to play at the University of Manitoba.
After graduating, he became the head coach of the St. John’s High School varsity boys program from 1968 to 1984, where his teams won the Provincial AAAA Championship in 1978.
He went on to coach for 16 years at the University of Winnipeg and spent nine years as the Athletic Director.
After retiring from the University of Winnipeg, he went on to be the Executive Director of the Manitoba College’s Athletic Conference, a position he held for 12 years.
He was an assistant coach with the Canadian Men’s National team for one year with legendary coach Jack Donohue.
He was named the CIS Men’s National Coach of the Year, was the President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches of Canada and was the co-founder of the Winnipeg Invitational Basketball Tournament.
He was also an author, writing three books on basketball coaching and was a broadcaster, providing colour commentary on CJOB radio and Global TV and hosting his own basketball show on Shaw TV He is a Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame member, Class of 2005 and part of the Manitoba Sport Hall of Fame, Class of 2013.
