The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced the recipients of two high school basketball scholarships and several high school hockey scholarships today. All high schools from across Manitoba were invited to nominate individuals from their high school hockey and basketball teams.
The Garett Lee Sidor Memorial Scholarship is named after Garrett, who was a student athlete at Windsor Park Collegiate. Garett tragically passed away in May 2007, just a couple of months after his team, the Windsor Park Royals captured the “AAA” Provincial Basketball Championships, where he was selected as a Provincial All-Star. Garrett was an all-around athlete who participated in hockey, volleyball, and basketball. Garett’s friends and family have come together to put a $500 scholarship in his name to be awarded to a male and female high school basketball student athlete each year.
Harneek Sahota of St. John’s-Ravenscourt School – is the captain of her basketball team and has played basketball at the school for four years. She has received the Cal Harding Award for her dedication and commitment to basketball and has been awarded MVP status each year due to her skills, consistent performance, and versatility to play different positions. She was the leader in assists, blocks, and rebounds and second in points. Harneek is also involved in the Community Service Club and has organized and participated in several donations drives for United Way “Koats for Kid’s” and a food drive for Harvest Manitoba. She is one of the eight elected members of the “Kendra’s Walk” to raise funds for CancerCare Manitoba to raise awareness for teens living with cancer. She also is a member of the schools “Youth in Philanthropy”, UNESCO, Green Team, Multicultural Club, and French Club. Harneek maintains an 88% academic average and she will be attending the University of Manitoba to pursue a science degree.
Darian Giasson of Grandview School – maintains an 85% academic average while participating not only in basketball, but soccer, badminton, track & field, and baseball. Darian demonstrates leadership on and off the court and always looks for ways to bring the team together. He works as hard as possible, despite the score, and inspires his fellow student athletes and teammates to do the same on the basketball court and the soccer pitch. He makes use of the fitness centre at the school and participates in student council led activities. Darian helps with basketball camps for younger students, he is a scorekeeper, was part of the school’s fundraising initiative for new uniforms and has earned his volunteer credit by helping at the local recreation commission on bingo nights, and painting bleachers and the dugouts.
