The Sport Medicine and Science Council of Manitoba is pleased to offer the Mental Health First Aid (Adults Who Interact with Youth) 2-day course to Manitoba coaches and sports personnel (see course details below).

The course is being offered at NO COST to Provincial Sport Organizations to offer to their coaching communities.  Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis - one individual per sport maximum.  Register soon; capacity is limited to 15 registrants.

Course Description:

Mental Health First Aid (Adults who Interact with Youth), is intended for an adult audience whose primary focus is youth (aged 14-25). Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with the young people in their lives, including at schools, extra-curricular activities, social services, family, friends, and communities.

Course Objectives:

Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with the young people in their lives, including at schools, extra-curricular activities, social services, family, friends, and communities. In the MHFA course, you will gain a solid understanding of the 5 basic actions of ALGEE:

  • Assess the risk of suicide and/or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance
  • Encourage professional support
  • Encourage other supports

ALGEE is the framework for having a confident conversation about mental health with family, friends, colleagues, and strangers.


Course Facilitator: Christy Rostek

Christy has been teaching Mental Health First Aid since becoming certified as an Instructor in 2017. She has been a practicing Clinical Social Worker for the past 23 years. She has specialized in working with adolescents and youth in the mental health and addictions field including, the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) Youth Services as a Rehabilitation Counsellor, and the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre (MATC) as a Mental Health Clinician. She has worked in both in-patient and outpatient programs in urban and rural settings. Christy has worked abroad in London, England as a Child Protection and Adoption Social Worker. She has more recently worked for several years as a Therapist at the University of Winnipeg. She currently has a full-time private practice (Liv Well Counselling). She is passionate about working with young adults as they navigate the transitions in their post-secondary life. She holds both Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Social Work, and has Intermediate Certification in Somatic Experiencing for treating trauma.
