What is 3x3 (three-ex-three)?
What used to be a simple half-court pick-up game has now become an officially recognized sport.
"BENEFITS of playing 3x3:
More, more, more! On average, players get 40% more touches on the ball (i.e. shots, handling the ball, passes, rebounds, etc..) when compared to the conventional 5v5 game.
Everyone is a guard. Because the game requires the ball to be moved quickly, all players need to share in the handling of the ball. This requires that players learn how to dribble with their heads up and look to move the ball quickly. You must defend. 3x3 is far more challenging to defend than 5v5. The nature of the game will force players to develop their individual and team defensive skills, particularly help side and ball containment.
Offensive movement. The basic principles of offence used in 5v5 basketball are essential to the 3x3 game - screen & cut, pass & cut, screening away, hard curls, drive, and dish.
Speed and quickness are of the essence. With the limitation of time and space, players are required to get the ball in play faster than the 5v5 game which provides for more shots, passes, rebounds, defending opportunities, etc."
Important Dates
- Registration Opens: June 5th, 2024
- Registration Closes: June 19th, 2024
- Administration, building teams, assigning teams, scheduling: June 20th- July 4th, 2024
- 3x3 Competition Begins: July 9th ,2024
- Playoffs: August 15th- August 29th, 2024
WMBA 3x3 Guidelines
- Participants will register within their catchment area.
- WMBA administration will form teams and recruit coaches.
- Teams will be made up of 5-6 players.
- Practices will not be mandated.
- Reversible jerseys will be provided by the WMBA.
- Teams will play approximately 2-3 matches per day.
- 2 games will be played simultaneously, one on each basket.
- There will be a 5-minute warmup period at the start of game time.
- Each match will be a 20-minute run time or the first to score 21 points.
- Games will be scheduled between 6:00 pm and 9:30 pm on weeknights.
- There will be a 25-minute period between scheduled game times. (ie 6:00, 6:25, 6:40...)
- Games may be rescheduled with time, space and weather permitted in the case of rain/inclement weather. The WMBA will communicate if an entire schedule will be postponed. If players are at the court the Gym supervisors/Officials will work together to determine if the game should be cancelled.
- Fair play and zero-tolerance rules are to be adhered to at all times
- WMBA 3x3 Reversible Jerseys.
- 6 Weeks of regular season games, plus 2 weeks of playoff games.
- Championship medals.
