It is with great sadness and devastation that Basketball Manitoba shares the news of the passing of Chad Posthumus. Chad suffered a brain aneurysm on November 9, and following complications, he passed on November 20.

Chad graduated from River East Collegiate, where he was recognized as an All-Manitoban and as one of the top five high school players in Canada in his grade 12 year.  He represented the Manitoba Provincial Team for 3 summers and was recruited to play at the University of British Columbia. He transferred to Howard Community College in Maryland and finally to Morehead State in Kentucky.  There, he was 4th in the NCAA in rebounds and was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Third Team.

He started his professional career in the NBA Summer League with the Chicago Bulls. Since then, he has played professionally in Japan, Argentina, China, the United States in the G-League, and Canada in both the NBL and the CEBL.  He has represented the Canadian National Team most recently at the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 in Brazil and on the Canadain national 3x3 team in 2023.

He was the first signed player of the Winnipeg Sea Bears in 2023, where he led the squad as team captain.  More about his basketball career can be found at https://www.seabears.ca/2024-bio-chad-posthumus

To support his family and grieve together as a community, the Winnipeg Sea Bears have set up an online Book of Condolences that you can access here.

The Posthumus family has asked that in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. More ways to honour Chad’s memory will be announced in due course.

The thoughts of the entire basketball community in Manitoba and beyond go to the Posthumus family at this time on their loss.
